Learning Modular Synthesis: Moog Mother-32

Quickly learn how to patch, sequence, and expand this popular semi-modular synth.

Short, concise, comprehensive

Love it. The lessons are short and to the point, yet plenty of information. M32 is a magical little box. Thinking about getting the DFAM and Subharmonicon as well. Ever consider making couple of courses for those as well or perhaps just expand on this one?

Got my money's worth on the Mother-32

Hey, love your teaching style Chris. I know I could dig up similar information from YouTube / Mother-32 manual, but you've made it more visual & auditory to really help me grasp and review the basics. Plan on taking more of your courses - you're great at explaining this stuff. Appreciate the enthusiasm. For me, this is well worth the money. Keep it up :)

Take the plunge into modular with the Mother

Whilst I knew I would go all-in with modular last year when I took this course, I was feeling overwhelmed where to begin. Starting with a semi-modular synth voice appeared like a logical step and following this course dozens of "clicks" happened in my brain and made me grasp the underlying concepts. I do not know if everyone needs to get a Mother-32, but even after my modular system has grown quite a lot I still keep going back to the Mother. She might be limited, sure, but she has a fat, classic sound. One thing though: I did not dare remove dear Mother from her enclosure but instead got the Moog tri-stand and added the DFAM and the Subharmonicon. A quite compact and very flexible system by itself.

I fell in love with the sound and possibilities of electronic music at a young age. I took synthesis lessons as a teen in the 1970s, learning on a modular Steiner-Parker Synthasystem. A kit-based PAiA modular was my dorm room companion in college. Soon after I graduated, I got a job at Sequential Circuits, where I contributed to several instruments and created Vector Synthesis. I went on to work for Digidesign, Marion Systems (Tom Oberheim), and was the chief engineer at Roland R&D US.

I’ve always enjoyed sharing what I’ve learned. I taught synthesis at UCLA Extension, was the technical editor for Music Technology and Recording magazines, and wrote a column for Keyboard magazine. I continue today, co-writing Patch & Tweak – the new book on modular synthesis – with Kim Bjørn, and maintaining a Patreon channel for beginning to advanced users. I also regularly play modular music live under the name Alias Zone, plus jam with others.

I also have a lot of experience creating online training. Before I started Learning Modular, I recorded nearly 50 online courses on creating graphics for television and film for lynda.com (now LinkedIn Learning). I've brought this experience of how to teach a difficult, technical subject in a patient, step-by-step manner to my modular synthesis courses.
