In general, the term envelope refers to the “shape” of a sound – the contour of how it gets louder and then softer over time. Sometimes envelope is used as shorthand for envelope generator.
Envelopes are often described by the stages they have in them – for example, an ADSR envelope has attack, decay, sustain, and release stages. This glossary contains definitions for the most common envelope types.
