MIDI is a common language to connect one synthesizer to another, and synthesizers to a computer. Although it is a digital language, it is easy to buy a MIDI to CV/Gate (control voltage and gate) converter module that handles both note events and MIDI clocks for driving sequencers and the such. The biggest thing to watch out for is what type of connector is required: the traditional 5-pin DIN, or a USB computer-style connection.
Some users have issues with timing accuracy over MIDI, caused either by trying to send too much information down the MIDI connection, or poor software implementation. Some – such as Expert Sleepers – have come up with more direct ways to send CV/Gate signals directly from the computer to a modular synth (and optionally, back again).
